For us, smiling is a universally powerful way to cultivate more gratitude, compassion, and loving energy across the world. Smiling is the ultimate expression of empathy and also spreads joy to those around us. Our well-researched Smile Index reveals that while people have been smiling 60% less, over 80% say smiling actually improves their sense of wellbeing. This is also because the act of smiling can actively increase serotonin levels, which make us feel better.

In 1997, we started expanding the Smiley Dictionary with an array of animated faces corresponding to each emoticon. These fun, expressive, creative iterations of the Smiley open up a world of possibilities for playful communication.
